Dr. Moxie,
I am a single mother with a big problem. I have a 10 year old son. He is a great student, talented, and very creative. Because he is not athletic and what people would call a "nerd," he is picked on at school. He is the butt of the other students jokes and no longer has a desire to attend school (which he use to love to do). What can I tell him or how can I help him? A lot of his fellow class mates play little league baseball so I signed him up for a team, I just think that made the problem worse.

Thank you for your question. You are in a very hard spot as a mother. I hope that you coming to me will help ease your burdens. Rather than looking at your sitsuation as something that is painful, look at it as a growing and learning invitation. Look at this as an opportunity as a mother to really make an impact on your child's life. Part of life, is figuring out who and what we are. Some people are athletes, some are artists, and some are great students. But the key in all of this is figuring out who you are and then becoming the best you. Encourage your son to find where he fits in. Their are kids out there who are in the exact same spot he is. Help your son realize his own talents, then help him pursue those talents. Encourge him not to conform to what the "cool kids" in school are doing. Encourage him to be his own kind of cool. Celebrate his accomplishments, and encourge your son to contine to develope those things he is great at. Help him become confident in who "he is" and not "who he isn't." The more confidence he has the more and more of a desire he will have to step out of his comfort zone and try new things. Hope this helps. You and your son will be in my prayers.
